The Michigan Youth Athletic Association is dedicated to working to protect the thousands of volunteer youth coaches and the organizations they represent throughout the State of Michigan. This past year, there has been significant developments that can negatively and drastically affect the community organizations for which we are all proud. Due to unfortunate incidents which have occurred over the past year resulting in litigation, we now find the waivers we all use for protecting our organizations have fallen under scrutiny by the courts. The effectiveness of these waivers are being challenged in courts. These are the same parental waivers used by schools, athletic and recreational organizations alike. If these waivers continue to be found invalid in our court system, we all are potentially facing serious consequences. Please see the Detroit News story and the article titled “Are your Waivers Useless?”.
We Need to Act NOW!
Legislation has currently been introduced in Lansing to help the youth athletic and recreational organizations across the State of Michigan. Without this legislation, our organizations and coaches are at risk. Please keep in mind this affects all programs requiring a parental waiver; school programs, non-profit athletic associations and those run by private companies for physical and recreational activities. Please look at the text of Michigan House Bill number 4970, introduced by State Representative John Walsh-Livonia.
