William Tandy-Westside Cubs-THINK Detroit PAL

Coach William Tandy is the Director of Wayne State University’s Upward Bound Program. The Upward Bound program provides counseling, tutorial services, male/female responsibility, test preparation, social development and a host of other academic and life skills in order to help students graduate from a post secondary institution.  Over the past ten years, Coach Tandy has graduated 100 percent of the students whom have participated in Upward Bound with over 85 percent of those students enrolling into a college or university.

William has continuously taken an active role in human development with his concentration on young males. Known throughout the Midwest as Detroit’s most aggressive and outspoken developers of youth, he has consistently demonstrated a great talent for motivation and leadership.  This led him to begin volunteering for his former little league team, the Westside Cubs. Mr. Tandy has been the head coach for the Cubs youth organization since 1994.  Coach Tandy has an incredible record of winning on and off the football field. He has won eight out of the last ten P.A.L championships recording 118 victories with only four defeats; he has a number of young men whom he has assisted in getting into post secondary institutions all over the country. Coach Tandy has young men playing at USC, U of M, Florida State and Tennessee State. The Cubs organization will have six young men playing for the Michigan State Spartans in the fall of 2009.

Dennis Shubnell-St. Claire Shores St. Joan of Arc Chargers-Catholic Youth Organization

In 1987 Dennis took the reigns of the St. Joan of Arc football program in St. Clair Shores.  In his 20+ years as head coach, the Chargers have won nearly 100 games, two division titles, and made 11 appearances in the Catholic League Prep Bowl.  However, it is not winning that Coach Shubnell stresses.  It is the fundamentals of the game and unity of a team.  He has done his best to prepare boys for the next level.  A husband of thirty years, Dennis has raised three terrific sons, all of whom he
coached, and one beautiful daughter that are the backbone of his life. Players that leave St. Joan of Arc always carry
with them one message Coach Shubnell always stresses: play as hard as you can, for as long as you can.
